The domain name is one of the most honest things on a website - to the search engines that is. Whereas we can create titles on web pages to suit a whim, when we purchase a domain name we are stuck with it - it is not something we can edit and change. Using "blendfall" in a domain name for the search engines to use would be a waste because very few would look for it.

However, using a domain name with programmer, or software, or contractor in it would more closely match the function of the company and the site, but be more difficult for legitimate offline users to find - you try searching for one of these and you would have difficulty finding it amongst the millions of competing sites. However, combined with a couple of other keywords you are likely to attract organic searchers.

What is the solution?

The ideal approach to choosing a domain name is to choose two. One should be used for the search engines, and reflect your main keyword theme. Separate the words with hyphens which helps the search engines extract the words from the name. Use this one online only, because otherwise you will find yourself having to say over the phone 'www dot blah hyphen blah hyphen blah dot com'.

The second domain should reflect your business name or other desirable and memorable name. This should be used offline, and not contain any hyphens or other special characters, including numbers. Otherwise you will find yourself on the phone saying www dot intro 2 software dot com and that is the number 2... no, not spelt tee double you oh, the digit 2...

So when you type the URL you want to find into your web browser, your computer sends a request to the DNS at your Internet service provider in order to find the IP address of the web server.

Once it has the correct address it can talk directly to the web server and you can search the site for as requested. I quick way to find the ip address of any web site is to use the ping command. Go to Start - Run and type, for example ping yahoo.com into the box.

A small window will appear with the IP address of the web server. There are also many great domains that supply this service and more, try ip-adress.com and see what I mean. Knowing this can help you understand why you will get delays when you register a new domain name and web site or any changes you make to an existing web sites dns settings.

The DNS information need to propagate correctly and this can take up to 24 hours for all the DNS servers globally to update and list your new domain setting that hold your website.

Who Controls Domain Names?

Domain Names are controlled by an organization called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN. They are responsible for deciding how the internet TLD structure should look and what TLD's should be used.

ICANN is a non-profit organization acting under the authority of the US Government, Department of Commerce.

Although ICANN make the big decisions on what TLDs are available, each TLD or country has its own domain registry.

Nominet for instants looks after all .uk domains and decides on the structure and release of the UK's second level domains. Second level domains can be useful for a country and can include many variables such as .co.uk, .sch.uk and .me.uk.

Registering A Domain Name?

To register a domain name, there a few thing you need to know. First need to check that the domain name you want is still available.

The easiest way to do this is to just go to the top of this page and use the domain name search box supplied. Anyone can register a domain name within the framework of allowed suffixes provided it isn't already taken.

There are some restrictions on TLD's such as .eu, .us and .Asia requiring to registrar to reside within a specific geographical location. To find out who owns a domain name you can do a search on websites like whois.net A search with Whois will show you details on who registered that domain, their name, address and contact details. Once you have decided on your domain name or names you need to contact a domain registrar. Domain registrars are approved companies that can register domains on your behalf.

It pays to shop around when choosing your domain registrar and often several are needed depending on amount and type of TLD's you wish to purchase. Prices can vary widely due to the global nature of the web. It doesn't really matter where the domain company is based and big saving can be found by selecting a registrar based overseas.

Once you have successfully acquired your domain name you will want to setup your web site, before you can do this you need to research web hosting providers. They will supply you with a web hosting and email hosting package. This basically means that you have hired web space on that companies web servers.

The beauty of owning your own domain and setting up a web hosting account is that it will give you full control of how you want you domain structure and control over the email for that web site and domain name.

Web hosting providers and the services they supply could be a whole article in itself but I will not go into to much detail here. Basic web hosting packages supply you with about 50MB of space and usually there will bee bandwidth restriction on the amount of data you can downloaded per month.

You need to spend a little time working out exactly what your site will be doing and what kind of services you require. It's no use paying $100 a month for a dedicated server just to run a word blog that's updated once a month.

New category-based TLDs are coming online all the time and available for the general public to register. When a new TLD becomes available, there is a period of time where businesses get the chance to apply for domains to register that they consider as their trademarks ahead of the general public.

The .asia TLD is going through this process now. During this 'Sunrise' period, companies and individuals have the chance to apply for specific names or trademarks before the general public. The sunrise period lasts for four months and names that are not allocated in this period are opened up to the general public on a first come first serve basis.

There is now an entire industry setup to help you get your name from these situation and it is called the pre-registration scheme. For an extra fee you can be top of that companies attempt to secure your name. Depending on the name and amount of interest this process can be a good way of ensuring your domain name or names.

Some companies use a slightly different approach and start a pre or post auction on the domain name they manage to acquire. Great business when you think of it, if they manage to register hosting.eu or hosting.asia for $15 then auction it to the highest bidder they can make themselves a lot of money for very little work.

This in itself is a very contentious issue but until the different governing bodies get their act together you have little choice to play the game. If you do find a company that will pre-register your domain name for a fee make sure they ensure a full refund of all fees if they are not successful in registering your chosen name.

The pre-registration service is not officially recognized by the domain registration organizations and so you have no rights to that name until it is fully registered.

For businesses and other organizations, the domain should always be registered in the organization's name, and the administrative (registrant) email address should be that of an officer or owner.

An organization's domain name should always be registered to that specific organization, because the registrant of the domain name essentially controls the usage of the domain name.

It may be tempting to turn over control of your domain to company technical personnel so the owner does not have to be bothered with handling renewal notices, etc. This practice is actually very common.

If a host or developer is the registrant of a domain, the organization can be essentially "locked in" to that provider's hosting services. This may be a problem if the organization wants to point the domain name to another service, and the registrant is not responsive or does not want to relinquish control of the domain name.

Preventing the loss of your domain name

This happens more often than you might think. A trusted employee registers a domain name and uses their contact information to register it. For whatever reason, they leave the company, the domain expires, and the rightful owner not only does not find out about it until it is already expired, but cannot reach the former employee to get the login information. Or worse, the termination of employment was not so gracious, and the former employee withholds the information out of spite.

No matter how busy you are, register the domain yourself or verify that the administrative contact is in a company officer's name and email address.

Was your domain name hijacked?

If the damage is already done, you will need to gather a few things together. For instance, the articles of incorporation, or other proof of ownership.

Other registrars may be different, but for Tucows, you need to fax the articles of incorporation (or the like) and an enlarged photocopy of your driver's license or photo ID, and your contact information to a special fax number. They will then change the administrative email address to the email address you specify and send the login to that address.

You may then login and change the administrative information to yours.

Again, your registrar may have a slightly different procedure. Just be prepared to prove who you are and that you have the proper legal authority.

The domain name for a web site should be relevant to your business and easy to remember. With several thousands of domain names being sold each day, it can be a challenge to find the appropriate domain name for your company. But being creative and original can go a long way and will serve your purpose well.

There are a few important points to consider when selecting a domain name:

Use existing domain names but in another fashion. For example if you want to have a website related to time management. Obviously www.timemanagement.com will probably not be available. You may try variations. I hope you get the idea. Anyway, you must try to keep the domain from becoming too long as well because the longer the domain name, then the harder it is to remember.

Create a unique name - If you create a unique name like yahoo or Amazon, you will have a greater chance of getting a shorter and catchy domain name. If again I take the above example - time management can take the shape of tima or mytime.

Domain Extensions or Types - There are many domain suffixes to choose from for a given name, i.e. .com, .net, .org, .name, .fr, .us, etc. Once you have a great web address (read domain name), the next step will be to find an equally great host to take your site to the internet world. So let's choose a web host for you.

Consider these when choosing a web hosting provider:

Disk Space - Decide how much disk space you will require. Normally most web hosting providers now offer unlimited disk space so this should not be an issue. Disk Space is a measurement of the number of files in weight on your server. Just be sure to check with your web hosting provider that there is unlimited Disk Space. CGI Bin - This is now an industry standard. If you do not have access to your own CGI Bin, you cannot install scripts and programs. You can't do without scripts.

MySQL - MySQL database is needed to hold the data in your website. Again this is something you cannot avoid. You will probably need a minimum of one database.

PHP - Many new scripts and programs require PHP support. Most website use the Linux and PHP support unless you are on a Windows server. Again, this feature is almost standard these days.

FTP Access - Unlimited and unrestricted FTP access to your site is essential. You will need an FTP program to transfer files.

Control Panel - A Control panel should be easy to use. Some control panels require hours of learning. If you select a plan where you cannot preview your control panel before you buy, you can always use the money back guarantee to get out of it if you are not happy. When you first begin your domain name search, it helps to have 5 terms or phrases in mind that best describe the domain you're seeking. Once you have this list, you can start to pair them or add prefixes & suffixes to create good domain ideas. For example, if you're launching a mortgage related domain, you might start with words like "mortage, finance, home equity, interest rate, house payment" then play around until you can find a good match.

Make the Domain Unique as much as possible

Having your website confused with a popular site already owned by someone else is a recipe for disaster. Thus, I never choose domains that are simply the plural, hyphenated or misspelled version of an already established domain. I still believe that Flickr desperately needs to buy Flicker.com - I hear kids in their 20's tell parents in their 40's and 50's to see photos on Flickr and always envision that traffic going straight to the wrong domain.

Try to choose Dot-Com Available Domains

If you're not concerned with type-in traffic, branding or name recognition, you don't need to worry about this one. However, if you're at all serious about building a successful website over the long-term, you should be worried about all of these elements, and while directing traffic to a .net or .org (as SEOmoz does) is fine, owning and 301'ing the .com is critical. Most of us, when thinking of the web in general and websites in particular, .com is what first comes to mind. This .com at the end of a website address is what is known as a domain extension - these have a particular function in the structure of the internet as a global construct and for that reason, there is more than one extension. In fact, there are quite a few possible extensions, but there are a few which are the most common among them.

While of course .com is the best known of these extensions, there are a few other common domain extensions - .net and .org are the most common other than .com. All three of these common domain extensions are known as top level domain extensions. These are the most commonly chosen extensions for websites.

.com is meant for use by commercially oriented websites, while .net was originally intended for non-commercial (generally speaking, personal) websites. .org was originally meant for use by non-profit organizations. However, there are no hard and fast rules governing the use of these common domain extensions. There are for-profit websites which use the .net and .org extensions, and non-profit organizations which use the .com extension.

The reason for this is that when registering a website, you may often find that the domain name you would like has already been registered by someone else in the domain extension of your choice. Domain name scams are becoming more and more common. These scam attempts are also becoming more sophisticated, less obvious and using unethical techniques that cause the domain owner to worry that they may lose their domain or another company may be trying to steal it. Depending on the scam, they may be after your domain name, your money in transfer fees, or your credit card details for fraud and identity theft.

Fortunately, there are seven easy things you can do to keep your domain name and related information safe, and they only take a few minutes each.

1) Know who your domain name registrar is.

When you purchase your domain name be sure to print out your receipt and keep it somewhere safe. The original registrar is the only company who should contact you about your domain renewal, and their website is where you will go to renew your domain name. One common scam involves a company sending out official looking renewal notices through the mail. If you send in the renewal notice with your payment they'll transfer your domain to their company where you'll be stuck paying higher fees or dealing with other problems.

2) Use a secure password as your domain registrar (not something like your name or a password you use for other things).

We all know passwords should be secure. Is yours? Registering a domain name is a simple task however there are a few items to look for in a domain name.

You have your business idea and you need to select a domain name. Your domain name is the "logo", the "advertisement" and more of your company. Just because your business is an internet business and not a "brick-and-mortar" it does not mean you can select any name as your domain name and people will come.

When selecting a domain name you can go to any domain name registrar online and search for domain names in your niche business idea. How do you do this?

Go to your favorite search engine and type in domain names. It should return a decent list of domain registration companies. Pick one and start your search. You do not have to purchase your domain name from the one you selected. You can do a search for cheap domain names and work with the list these search returns.

Domain name registration ranges from a couple of dollars to double-digit teens depending on whom you register with. Prior to registering your domain name I would read the features of this company. Some may have stipulations that you cannot transfer a domain name from their servers for 60 to 90 days. This is not good if you are not hosting your account with them. Make sure to read the terms.

How do I select a domain name that represents my business professionally? Good question. When selecting your domain name you want to use your keyword(s) or keyword phrase that you are using for your business idea.

I have written articles on how to accomplish this task. If you are unsure, read search for the articles or search on the internet to find the information.

If that domain name is taken, try to add a word at the beginning or end of the word for example, createneedlepointkit.com. or needlepointkitguide.com.

Both possible domain names have your keyword or keyword phrase in the domain name.

This is good. You want to include your keyword or keyword phrase in your domain name for search engine optimization and to inform the internet visitor of what your website offers.

Yes, your domain name can be a form of advertising for you. The internet visitor who searches for needlepoint kits and arrives at your website should conclude based on your domain name that your site is about needlepoint kits not how to build a deck in ten days.

It is very important to try to register your business idea and keywords in the exact order that you have determined what your internet business will offer.

In addition, an important point to stress when searching for a domain names is to try to acquire a domain name with .com. com is the most widely used domains. Registering additional domains such as .net, .org, ect, can be done later.

With 'big' money at stake, it's no wonder the Domain Name Barron's prefer to keep an extremely low profile. Here are 10 Hot Tips to turn 'your' domains into dollars.

Tip 1. (More a 'revelation' than a tip). Did you know that there are now businesses specially set up to 'finance' those looking to buy domain names? Were you aware that there are multi-million dollar companies, whose sole activity is buying, selling, parking or leasing domain names? Why is this relevant? Well, these 'major players' are not in it for fun. They know (for sure) there's 'big bucks' to be made from domain names.

Tip 2. When it comes to turning domains into dollars, names ending in .com are still 'king'. The two word domain name DataRecovery.com went for a whopping $1,659,000.00 in the first half of 2008, whereas the one word Fund.com when for a simply staggering $9,999,950.00 in the same month / year. OK, your chances of getting hold of a good 'one word' domain are slim, but bear in mind that, as the price of such exclusive domains increase in value, a knock-on effect occurs. Down the road, sales of this magnitude can influence prices paid for good 'two-word' (and even 'three-word') domain names.

The best domain names are those consisting of generic terms / expressions (and 'keywords'). 'Anti Virus' is an example of a generic expression, as is 'Poker Tournament'.

Tip 3. Understand, it's not just dot com domain names that sell. There's money to be made from other Top Level Domains (TLD's) too. i.e. .net, .org, .info and .biz.

FilmSchool.net and WallStreet.info sold in 2008 for $49,501.00 and $25,500 respectively. If you had discovered either of those examples as an 'unregistered name', you would probably have been asked to pay no more than $10 to secure your prize!

Perhaps more appropriately, numerous sales in the $0000 and $000 price range occur every month.

If the .com version of a domain name is already registered, you must take care to avoid identical domain names (with different name extensions) where 'brand name' or 'trademark' infringement might be an issue.

However, if the dot com name is a pure generic name (e.g. Christmas Tree) then it may be safe to snap up one of the other TLDs or a Geo / Regional version of the same domain name as (to the best of my knowledge) it's still the case that obvious 'generic' terms cannot successfully be protected by trademark registration. (But don't rely on this, always investigate and take professional advice).

Tip 4. When it comes to domain names with 'country' or 'region' specific extensions, exciting 6 figure sales are occurring. Don't believe me? Well note that FreeCreditReport.co.uk sold in 2008 for a very healthy $300,000. (Wish I'd turned that domain into dollars).

Tip 5. Domain Names don't have to be short and memorable to warrant a fantastic 6 digit purchase price. Demand is steadily increasing for sensible names, comprised of one or more words that clearly describe a marketable product or service. Why? Every year the number of businesses goings online increases dramatically. (Work it out for yourself).

Tip 6. Don't for one moment think that 'flipping' (i.e. buying in the hope of immediately reselling) is the only way to turn your domains into dollars. If you acquire several domain names, you should investigate developing some into websites that you can then sell, along with the domain name. Doing this can add a lot of value to the domain. It also gives you more opportunities to make a sale, as you can look to attract not only those looking for a good domain name, but also folk simply seeking a website with a decent name.

Even if you know nothing about website development, you can get a freelance to build one for you quite cheaply. Web Developers frequently advertise their services through elance.com, guru.com (or a whole range of other Outsourcing Websites).

Many domain names are suitable for 'Free Parking' via services willing to share revenue generated by visitor traffic. Simply type 'Domain Parking' into your favourite search engine, then compare offers. Such services effectively host your domain name for free, and can make your domain look more appealing to a prospective buyer.

If a Free Parking Service makes you just $5 each year over and above the annual cost to register your domain name, you're ahead of the game. OK, $5 a year is not much (unless, that is, you've got 100, 1000, or 10,000 domains that are all earning you a $5 profit annually). Do the math! Decent domain names will increase in value overtime so, by parking names to cover their renewal costs, you can afford to sit back and wait for a decent offer. (Win, Win!)

Tip 7. While there are no 'absolute' rules, consider carefully before you buy an 'already registered' domain name that contains a hyphen, a numeral, or both. In some instances, you can come out on top, but in most cases you'll be wasting your money. Also, beware of those offering domains that appear to be really great one or two word names until - that is - you realize that the person who registered the name (not necessarily the seller) has used the number '0' (zero) rather than the letter 'o' as part of a word. There are other text variations that can create a misleading impression. (So be careful!).

Tip 8. We've touched on this point earlier, but it's very important you avoid names that have been trademarked or - through passage of time - come to be recognised as 'known brands'. Just because a dot com name is available, don't jump to the conclusion that the fantastic name you've identified is a safe bet.

OK, you may well decide that - for the risk of just a few dollars - you'll register it while you can, and investigate later. (That's probably what I'd do!). But subsequently, always remember to do your 'due diligence' before using such a name, or offering it to someone else.

Bear in mind that some business may (for whatever reasons) chose to go with the .net, .org or some other extension. In many cases where this applies, those businesses will have taken the sensible precaution of purchasing the .com version too. But not always!

So, irrespective of the extension of any domain name you might be thinking of buying (e.g. .com, .net, .org, .us etc) check to see if anyone has registered / is using the same domain with an alternative extension.

Also bear in mind that there are still some businesses without an internet presence, who may be using that fantastic name you came up with 'off-line'. Where this applies, they may well have Trademark or similar rights over it.

You can also get your fingers badly burn if you register a deliberate misspelling or 'sound-a-like' of a famous brand name. My advice? Don't bother (or check with your lawyer first!)

Tip 9. When it comes to using 'brand creation' as means of converting domains into dollars, some businesses deliberately choose (or dream up) domain names with a vague / nebulous quality. This means that, later, they have the option to change what their business does, or move into additional fields, without having to alter their name.

For example, although we all associate Amazon or eBay with what we currently known them for, there's a chance that - in fifty years time - they could have morphed into new enterprises (which may have nothing to do with the activities we associate them with right now).

You might sometimes be offered, or dream up, domain name ideas that don't describe or indicate a specific business or interest area. Such names can be valuable if you can locate someone with cash, who agrees with you. However, more often than not, they will prove very hard to sell, compared to those that give a clear indication of what an internet user might reasonably expect if he / she decides to visit a website with that name.

Tip 10. In this article it's only been possible to uncover the tip of the iceberg as far as domain name 'buying & selling tactics' are concerned. Tip 10 is to realize that, in order to buy and sell domains like a 'pro', you need to get serious about increasing your knowledge, and start planning your strategy. Invest some time and energy in learning all you can from 'experts' to give yourself that essential 'edge'. Then formulate a campaign to turn those domains into dollars.

I have personally spent hours typing .com URLs into my favorite domain registration service just to find each name I type is already taken. Let me answer three questions that many people have when choosing a domain name.

1. What if I can't get the .com extension? - Personally, I would choose a different domain name rather than have any other extension besides .com. Why? Because that is how I was "raised". Kind of like the granddad saying he doesn't understand why we have all the fancy iPods, DVDs, and cell phones. I was around when most .com URLs were still available, so I still try to use the .com. And still today, .com is the default extension people try if they don't specifically remember another extension. But, as more .coms are taken, people will get used to typing other extensions like .net, .org, and .biz.

2. Should I use hyphens if I can't get the domain name I want? - I personally would not use hyphens in my domain name. They are hard to type, difficult to remember, and must be explicitly included when verbally mentioning the website. The other day I was on a conference call with someone promoting a website that was incredibly long and had four hyphens in the name. The person was giving out the website name on the call, and for some reason, people had a hard time getting to the webpage. People were saying that the website was down, they could not find the page, etc. Well, the real problem was the website name was too long and had too many hyphens. If you do use hyphens, just use one. If you have to use more than one, get another name! You will thank me in the future!

Now before we go any further, we need to make sure that we are on the same page by defining a few terms. A domain name is the website address that people will either type in or click on to go to your website. Your domain name is also known as your URL. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. Don't ask me why they call it that. It's just a technical way of describing your website's address.

Let's take a look at the components of a good, quality domain name. Assume that you wanted to post news from France on your proposed website. It would be a good idea to include either the word "France" or "French" along with the word "news" in the URL. A great example of this technique is found in the URL, www.french-news.com. Anyone searching for French news on the Internet would have a much more likely chance of finding this website due to the key words "french" and "news" found in the URL address itself.

Let's use another example. If your website was about kid shoes, be sure and include the words "kid" and "shoes" in the URL. All things being equal, the search engines favor websites whose domain name includes the key words that are being searched. While this is certainly the case for key words, search engines give no special treatment or preference to domain names that end in .com, .net, .org, .biz or any of the other multitude of URL extensions. Google, Yahoo and other search engines are, for the most part, blind to the URL extension of your domain name.

However, whenever possible it is important to pick an URL extension of .com because that's what most people will remember when trying to go to your site. I know, I have a .net domain name. And, while it works just fine, it would certainly work better with an extension of .com. This really only applies to your customers who try to go to your website by directly typing in your domain name address. The search engines find it just fine, but your customers may not. My experience in this area is not one you should duplicate. Use .com whenever you can.

There is one other important aspect of picking a domain name. You want to make sure that the key words that you pick to use in your domain name get the most mileage possible. What do I mean by that? I mean that if you intend to sell shoes for kids on your website, you might consider using the key words "baby shoes" or "toddler shoes" as opposed to "kids shoes". Why?

Here's why. The key words "baby shoes" has about 5,610 searches and "toddlers shoes" as about 5,400 searches each month. The key words "kids shoes" has only 330 searches each month. Obviously more people are using the terms "baby shoes" and "toddler shoes" when looking on the Internet. Play the odds by selecting a domain name that incorporates effective key words.

So whether you're selling floor mats, seat covers or baby shoes, the principles are the same. Use high quality, relevant, carefully selected key words in the URL address of your domain name. That means you'll have to do some research prior to buying the domain name. But careful planning now, will pay great dividends later. So choose wisely.

Choosing the proper URL is the first step to operating a successful website. The key is common sense and research. There is no substitute for either one. Don't get emotionally involved with a cutesy name just because it sounds good. Unless that's already the name of your business, then you should consider one that is more keyword enhanced. Assuming that the rest of your site is properly optimize, the URL you pick for your website will help drive added visitors to your site every month.

How to Transfer a Domain Name Registered With Google to a GoDaddy Account

This article will teach you how to transfer a Google registered domain to GoDaddy. I found it extremely frustrating that there are no decent instructions out there about how to transfer a domain you registered with Google (most likely when you signed up for a Blogger account) over to another Registrar. This process takes a few steps and will more than likely take you a couple days to finish, but stay with me and we'll get through it together.

The first thing you will need to do is have an account at a registrar where you want your Google domain to be transferred to. I've been using GoDaddy.com forever, and I've never had any issues with them, so if I can highly recommend them for your domain registering needs. Normally it only costs $7.00 to transfer a domain name, and you get an additional year of registration for free.

Now that you have your account set up there, log in and go to the top "Domains" dropdown tab and select "Transfer Domains to GoDaddy". Type the domain name you wish to transfer from Google in the box and select "Go". If the domain name is available for transfer, click "Proceed to Checkout". Continue through the checkout process and pay for the transfer. You will receive several emails from GD, one of which will contain transfer codes for your domain, so don't trash these!

In the next step, you have to get into it with the nice folks over at Google. When you buy a domain name through the big "G", your domain name is actually being hosted by Enom.com or GoDaddy.com (Yeah, go figure), but for some reason it's extremely difficult to get access to your own domain name.

Proceed to the Google Apps page here...google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html

Click on "Returning User Sign In" in the upper right. Enter the domain name that we're trying to transfer and click GO. This should log you into your domain management control panel. If you are asked to log in again, just log in with your domain username and password (Hopefully you remember this).

Click on the "Manage this Domain" text in the upper right. On this page, click on "Domain Names" in the upper left section of the page. Doesn't it seem like we've clicked "domain names" about a thousand times already?

Finally...you are now looking at the domain settings for your Google domain. In the Primary Domain section, see the link for Advanced DNS settings..Click that. You will now see the following:

To change Advanced DNS settings, sign in to your DNS console with the following information :

Domain : domainX.com

Password : xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

eNom customer service email : GoogleClients@enom.com or GoogleClients@godaddy.com

Write this password down, because you're going to need it when you email Google for your "Authorization Code". Send an email to the address you see on the screen above, it could be either of those addresses shown. Tell them you are the owner of www.YourDomain.com and you need the authorization code to transfer your domain to a new registrar. Write in the password show above also. This will be all they need to unlock your domain, and email the transfer code to you. It may take a few hours to a day to get the email.

Once you do, copy the Authorization Code and go back into your GoDaddy.com account and go to the "My Domains" tab where you can manage your domain names. In the upper left, you will see another 4 tabs that read "Domain Names" "Buy/Sell" "Tools" "Help". Roll over the "Domain Names" tab and select "Pending Transfers" from the dropdown list. You should now see the domain name you are trying to transfer. Click the checkbox next to the domain name and on the left portion of the page you will see an "Authorization" button. Roll over Authorize and select "Begin Transfer Authorization". Find that email GoDaddy sent you before, which contains a Transfer ID & Security Code and enter those numbers into the appropriate boxes which should now be showing. Click "Next" and select that it is ok to transfer. Now enter the holy Google Authorization you were emailed. You should now be seeing a message that says "Accept Transfer at Current Registrar". That's it, it's now out of your hands. Hopefully within the next 1-5 days, someone over at Google domains will press the button to finalize the transfer into your GoDaddy.com account. Once it's been transferred, it will show in your "My Domains" section of your account, and you're free to change DNS NameServers, forward it, or any of the other features.

It can be overwhelming but don't let it intimidate you; it really is not so bad when you have some information first.

Hosting is related but different, a hosting company actually puts your site online. Before you can get hosting you will need to have a domain name registered or in the process.

There are many different domain registrars and chances are you will not need to stay in contact with them unless you plan to change hosting or to renew your name. If you do need to contact them it is very important that you are able to. Not sure where to start?, try asking someone who has a domain that they use and what kind of service they get.

Your domain name reflects on your site so put a lot of thought into it, keep it short and memorable. Many registrars will have a service where you can pick a name based on your keywords. You really should have a good idea what keywords you want to use; if not do more research, it is that important. If you pick a name yourself, it may not be available. Try changing the wording around or use different words. It can be frustrating but keep after it.

For business purposes it is best to use a .com name, most search on .com and your name could show on another extension such as .org. This will not show your site and you want to be found.

Hopefully after not too much fuss you will find a name you want, so go ahead and register it. Remember if your name is not renewed it can become available to someone else. Register it for as long as possible to be on the safe side. When your name is registered you will receive information about it, you do NOT want to lose this information.

So far, so good, you have a domain and are set to find your host. Sadly this can be more overwhelming than the domain. Before you even start it's important to know that it is not a good idea to use the same company for domain and hosting. If you need to change to a different host for some reason, this can cost a small fortune to get the domain transferred.

For hosting it is a good idea to ask someone that uses a host. Again service is very important here since the host keeps your site running. To make it easier for you, have an idea of what you need before you shop for a host. There are so many features to hosting and most users will not likely need everything.

There are 2 kinds of hosting, on Windows and Linux/Unix; this has nothing to do with your computers operating system. It's the servers the host is using. The only time you really need Windows servers is if you plan to use ASP. If you don't know what that is or don't want to use it, then you will want Linux/Unix hosting.

There really is too much to go into here but look at what you need. CPanel access is a good thing to have. Or say you want to setup a blog, you may want to have Fantastico and at least 1 SQL database. Site storage (room for files stored) and bandwidth (transfer capacity) are widely misunderstood. Bandwidth is used transferring information; showing a picture, downloads and streaming (audio/video) You are allowed a certain amount each month.

Yes you can plan for these both, they are measured and reported to you. Get what you think you will need and you can upgrade for more. There is NO such thing as unlimited storage or bandwidth, simply not possible. Most hosting is shared so each get their space, but even with dedicated, how can one server hold or transfer everything?

While you are looking at all this, you may want to test the company on how they respond. Find the contact information and ask them a question. How soon they respond and how they treat you is a good indication of what service to expect. Remember that if you have a problem you have to able to reach your host.

This is a lot to think about and this is actually a short version. When you are satisfied and sign up with a host they will send you information as well. Keep this and find the part called DNS Domain Name Servers. This DNS information must be given to the domain registrar for your site to show up.
