ICAAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is responsible for the worldwide coordination of domain names. A domain name is a unique identifier that allows other computers to identify and access your site. A dedicated domain should be as short as possible and may contain both letters and symbols. The name should be easy to remember and easy to spell. With the explosion of Internet businesses created every day, the name must grab the attention of the customer and compel them to visit the site. The name you choose will serve to identify and brand your company.
Customer demographics should also be considered when creating the name to make it attractive to the target audience. Domain names may be purchased in different increments of time (i.e., one year, two years, five years, ten years). It is up to the company who registers the name to renew at the appropriate time. Failure to do so could result in the permanent loss of the domain name.
Whether or not the company has an existing name, several variations for the domain name should be considered as some names may already be taken. If the company already has a name, the same name would likely be the first choice for the online presence as well. If the name desired is not available, an offer to purchase the name could be made, or a close but not exactly similar name can be formulated. A startup business must choose a name based on the purpose of the company. Customers will identify the company by its name.
