Domain Name - My First Choice Has Gone!

By Louisa Jaarola

Are you new to the internet business world? Just registered a domain name or are trying to and can't get what you wanted? Well read on, because there may be another way to get the domain name you were looking for.

Our world is becoming more technology based by the minute and this is only the beginning. The primary purpose of domain names is to create addresses that are easier to remember and use than numbers. Domain names are the human-friendly forms of Internet addresses, and are commonly used to identify and find web sites, they are now available to everyone in every corner of the globe and this has presented a problem, they're running out!

The last count of websites in 2007 was over 12.8 million and this number is growing annually. Industry experts predict that over 500 million domains will become active annually within the next ten years. Consider countries such as India and China who are rapidly bringing their massive populations online. Domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Many domain names available from extensions like .com or .net will soon be exhausted.

Choosing your domain name is a very important factor for any online business and can contribute substantially towards the success or failure of a web site. More than a web address, relevant domain names are an important element of a successful internet marketing strategy. A high quality domain name will contain generic key words or key word phrases that are descriptive of an industry, a business, specific products or services. You definitely need to choose a domain name that is not only memorable, but will influence a sites ranking in search engines and improve the visibility of the internet business to the internet surfer.

However, unless the name you have chosen is really quite obscure, it seems you can never get exactly what you want as someone else has nearly always registered it first. Instead you may have to opt for something like http://www.nameofmainsite.com/yourchosenname or choose to ad other keywords which just ad to the length of the name. Using this form of URL to direct potential customers is hardly professional! For those not familiar with the tech talk; URL is the abbreviation for, "Uniform Resource Locator", a term that identifies a web site address on the Internet. For example a site URL containing the phrase, "marinefish" has a higher possible correlation, and thus, a higher possible ranking to the key word search for "fish" than a URL without that key word match or one such as "marinefishforyoutoday."

There is another way to get exactly the domain name you want. There is a new domain that has entered the market being .ws which appropriately stands for web site, makes more sense and is easier to type in than .com! This means that there are now more domain names to choose from, but for how much longer?

Having your own domain name opens a world of opportunity. Whether it be for promoting your own business, or purely using it for your own personal use. It's a universal way to keep in contact with customers or even family and friends.
