3 Things You Need to Know Before You Buy Your First Domain Name

By Tellman Knudson

There are many reasons to start an internet business. Maybe you are looking for a primary income source, or need to supplement an existing income or retirement pension. Or, maybe, you just want to become pithily rich! No matter the reason, every internet business starts at the same point; buying a domain name. And, every beginner buying a domain name has very similar questions. Keep reading to learn the answers to the top 3 asked questions from new internet business owners.

1. What is a domain name and why do I need it?

A domain name is address of your website. It is very similar to a house address. Picture the internet to be the world and your domain name is your physical home address. This address enables people to find you and without this, no one would be able to find your website.

To get a domain name, you need to go to a registrar, who is the "middleman" of domain purchasing. By purchasing a domain name from a registrar, this allows you to use this website and domain name as you wish. When choosing a domain name for your internet business, you should pick one that reflects or represents your website. It is also important to choose a domain name that is easy to remember, easy to spell so that it is easy for people to remember.

2. When buying a .com domain name for my internet business, should I also buy the .biz, .org, .us and other versions?

Generally, no. It is a very rare situation that you would need to buy all the versions of a domain name. If you have an unlimited budget, buy all of them. You can redirect the other ones to you main .com domain just in case someone types in .org or .net by mistake. However, someone making that mistake does not happen too often. Most of the time, if someone is just tying a domain name, they are going to type it in as a .com, so normally, it is fine just to buy the .com version.

3. Is it beneficial to have a similar domain name to someone else's domain name?

Unless you are trying to have something like Amazonbooks.com to inadvertently grab traffic from a popular site that is ridiculously huge then 99% of the time having a similar domain name won't matter. The reason it won't matter is because there are millions and millions of websites out there.

The way you are going to get visitors will be by a variety of traffic strategies. You may end up using paid advertising, blogging, article marketing or you might end up doing a Joint Venture. In all cases, your direct domain name is going to be emailed to your list. They will be clicking a redirect link to get to your website and not typing it into a web browser.

Purchasing a domain name is the first step to starting an internet business and allows people to find your website.
