Learn How to Buy Domain Names and Make Money

By Mike Furlong

If you want to learn how to buy domain names and make money, look no further. Here are some tips.

I think the first question you should ask yourself is if this is for business or pleasure? Fun or profit? And if your answer is both, it might as well be business! For if you want to make a profit, it's business.

Whether your aim is to set up your own domain, buy a domain name to resell, or set up a website to flip, the next questions to answer is what is the product or service you are selling?

Your domain should include the name of your product or service. You may have a great business name, and if you're lucky it is also your product or service name. If the two aren't the same, go for the product or service name.

Search engine optimization (SEO) experts will tell you that most search engines will favor a website that includes the keyword or search term in the domain name. Frequently the keyword or search is highlighted on the results page which draws attention to your website name if it includes the keyword or search term.

So if you must have a website domain name with your business name, that's fine. But go ahead and have a website domain name with your product in it as well. You can buy domain names relatively cheap, so get both. Buy a domain name with your business and buy one with your product name in it. Believe me, you won't regret it.

What about hyphens (or dashes) in a website domain name? Although many don't care for the look of a hyphenated website name, it has been my experience in some small-scale testing that hyphenated domain names were indexed a little faster by the search engines. As I said earlier, since domain names are so inexpensive, I would buy both if you can. You can redirect one to the other and avoid losing any traffic. You can use the whatever version of the domain name you prefer as your primary website address. If you use the non-hyphenated name, I would capitalize the first letter of each word to aid readability.

Which domain should I use? .com .org .net .info .biz something else? A country domain?

Well the gold standard is a .com domain, but some people have made clever use of other domains. For example, del.icio.us used the United States .us country domain to make a word. Delicious eh? Some radio stations are using .fm which is the country code for Federated States of Micronesia. .tv is the country code for Tuvalu which as you might imagine is useful for TV or video-related websites.
