6 Tips to Get the Right Domain Name

By Val Wilson

A domain name is the name that identifies a website. For example, Microsoft.com is the domain name of Microsoft's website.

People are increasingly coming to realise how valuable domain names are as commodities in their own right. Businesses are realising that the right domain name can be the difference between success and failure on the web. A good domain name can generate enough traffic to turn an unprofitable website into a profitable one.

As an example of their potential value, creditcards.com recently sold for $2.75 million, a record for a 2 word domain name. Fund.com sold for $10 million in early 2008.

Obviously, the vast majority of domains will not fetch this kind of money, but there is the potential to make a very good income trading domain names. Making money from domain names is not new and not revolutionary, but it is an industry that is growing exponentially, and an opportunity that should be grabbed with both hands.

So, how do you get a good domain name?

1. Avoid overly long and complicated domain names. A short name is much easier for your potential visitors to remember. The very short names are mostly already gone, but good names are still available.

2. Link your domain name to the product your website is selling. For example, if you sell gardening tools, get a domain that makes this clear, for example gardentools.com. Potential customers will then know what you're offering, meaning your traffic will be more targeted.

3. Make it unique - an original name will stick in peoples' minds, so they will visit and revisit your site.

4. Stick to dotcom extensions - people are familiar with these, and so are more comfortable with them, and more likely to visit your site.

5. It is essential that your domain name is easy to pronounce and to spell. It is very important that when someone hears your domain name that they know how to spell it - otherwise they will type in the wrong address, and you'll lose visitors.

6. Persevere! The domain name you first choose will probably already be taken, but keep trying. Stick to the rules above, but use your imagination - there are still lots of profitable domain names out there. As Bill Gates said, "Domains have and will continue to go up in value faster than any other commodity ever known to man." Don't miss this opportunity!

Create Your Own Public Domain Bookmark Lists

By Steven Chabotte

One of the biggest challenges of working with the public domain is finding the exact materials you want to use.

With the exception of some megasites, digitized public domain materials are literally scattered in thousands of places on the web. That means that you will often find yourself spending hours with your favorite search engine digging up nuggets you can use for your latest project. It also means that you are going to stumble across many sources of material that aren't what you are looking for.

When I search, I'll generally stumble across 20 or more public domain repositories before finding exactly what I want.

Now if I'm in a rush, I just keep moving on until I fund exactly what I'm looking for and them move forward on the project. But when I have a bit of extra time, I start adding these sites to my list of public domain bookmarks so I will have them available to me at a later date for future projects.

Your web browser's favorites folder is the perfect place for all these resources. With just a few clicks, you can add another resource to your growing list of personal public domain bookmarks. There are a few keys you must follow to mazimize the use of your browser's favorites function however.

  • Organization is the first key. Create a folder called something like "public domain links." Below that folder, create additional folders as needed to help organize your links into categories. For instance, you might have a section devoted to sheet music, another section devoted to mythology books, another to Civil War images and so on. You can even create subfolders of these folders to really drill down the categories.
  • Good descriptions is the second key. You can personally label each bookmark so you know what it is about later. By writing your own description about the contents of the link, the next time you need resources for category X, you just scan the bookmarks you have for that category and go right to the resources. That means no more time invested in searching (unless of course you need to find more materials - which you can again add to your growing bookmark list.)

By taking a bit of extra time when doing your public domain searches to create a useful and usable list of bookmarks, your product development based on public domain materials will become more and more efficient. So take the time on your next search to being creating your very own bookmark list.

I Have My Free Domain, What About You?

By Sheldon C. A. Smith

When you are trying to establish a presence on the internet, the first thing that you need to do is register a domain name. Choosing the proper domain name is very important at this stage because your domain name is your unique identity on the internet which directs people to your website. When registering your domain, you can choose to pay for it as many people do, or you can register your domain for free.

When registering a free domain, there are two choices that you can go with. The first is to register your domain with a free hosting provider. This option will package your domain name with web space so that you can get going right away. You will often get anywhere from 25mb to 100mb of disk space, which is not bad when starting out, however, your domain name will look like this - yourname.hostingcompany.com or hostingcommpany.com/yourname. As you can see, this doesn't exactly set you apart from the competition.

The second option is to register your domain name with a company that will offer you your chosen name with a sublevel extension. For example, instead of paying for yourname.com, you can register yourname.co.cc for free. It doesn't look that different and your name is still the focal point of the actual address. You can register any name that you like so long as it is still available. If it is a popular name or word, there might be a nominal fee but you can always get around that with hyphens or simple rearrangement.

Your free domain also gives you control over your domain name servers. What this means is that you can have it directed to your hosting company where it will be easier for you to manage and upload files and images. If you do not have a hosting company for your domain, there are many websites that will offer you free hosting, some with ads and some without. You can also forward your domain to another website so that when your customers type in your address, they will be redirected to another site or page.

Registering a free domain name is fast as it only takes a couple of minutes to set up. The control board or domain settings screen is very convenient as it allows you to make any changes that you need to make quite instantly. So you see, starting a business online does not mean that you need to spend money to establish your web identity. Choosing to go with a free domain can get you started just as fast while keeping money in your pocket for other expenses. Register your free domain name today!

All About Webpage Domain Name Registration (Reasons and Services)

By Ronald Hudkins

First and foremost is that the Internet is not pass้ and experiencing a downward trend. The fact is its still growing at an astounding daily rate. Most people modern day are computer savvy and a very large majority now actually research a product or information online before making a decision to purchase. If you're thinking about starting or expanding a business opportunity on the Internet the time is right. The first step is to register your business name, even before you complete building your a website.

Some of the most basic and understood reasons for wanting to register an independent domain name are as follows;

1. Unique identity. Many search engines will no longer list redundant affiliate Websites as they see them all as simply the same Website which would inundate and clutter their directory. Additionally, Internet surfers are not looking for replicated sites and would search using a service that provides the best and most varying information for a customer's valuable time. With a personal domain name however, you get Websites listed in search engines, increased exposure and subsequently generate more free traffic and sales for the site you work so hard to put up in the forefront.

2. Professionalism. Customers seek out professional companies offering quality products and services. A personal domain offers and presents a professional image, prestige, and invaluable credibility. A personal domain allows the webmaster to customize, add, alter, include or delete and present their products and services in the manner they specifically choose.

3. Another words, Control. The Webmaster (you) have complete control as to what your site looks like and what information it contains.

4. Short, sweet address. Instead of having to advertise long, hard-to-remember URLs, you, can create an easy-to-remember domain name (e.g. MyBusiness.com). From there, building a Website with links to your Gateway(s) or, in the case of affiliate sites you wish to promote is a simple matter. You can easily set a personal domain to automatically redirect (referred to as "URL forwarding") to a favorite Gateway or any other site. For example, you could advertise a name like OurBusiness.com, but when your prospects enter that URL, they'll be automatically be redirected to the Gateway of your choosing.

5. A Permanent address. With a personal domain, you and your family or business can have permanent, lifetime e-mail addresses that you'll never have to change. Likewise, you'll be able to create exactly the e-mail addresses you want (e.g. YourFirstName@YourDomain.com, Info@YourDomain.com, MyBusiness.com, Support@YourDomain.com, etc.).

Like everything, not all similar services and products are created equally. You do in fact get what you pay for. Domain registrations can go from $1.99 up to and exceed $30 annually. Check the fine print and be sure you know exactly the benefits each registrar has to offer. There is some pretty common ground out there among the competition. Some offer you hosting as well (a place to park your Webpage). Web hosting packages include storage, email accounts, domain and more services to consider for your complete business needs! Some sell you a domain name at a highly affordable rate but you might just be sacrificing the ability to transfer your new domain name to another hosting service so again, read the small print if you have other plans and services already in place.

Many domain services allow you to keep your contact information updated easily by using their Domain Management System. You will also be able to renew your domain name and update the Domain Name Servers (DNS information). By using your unique username and password established when you registered the domain name with their company.

The domain registrar that I personally use has some unusual features such as Word Wizard which allows me to use the name of a major city or state as part of a domain name to make it memorable. The Word Wizard combines my keyword with either category to create a domain name. Then to there is a function called Domain Twist where if you are having trouble coming up with an available name, the Domain Twist takes words and gives them a twirl to come up with variations of the original name.

A function that I particularly like is in an instance where if you already own a domain name that you registered using another registrar you can save money by taking advantage of their low transfer price. An added benefit to transferring your domain to the service I use is that they will also add one year to the original registration term you had with the company you are transferring you domain name from.
They also let me search and register a maximum of 30 domains at one time and register variations of my primary domain names to avoid confusion and copycat sites.

Best of all now that we all deal with international customers (and I have personally not found it anywhere else) is the ability to create domain names in Korean, Japanese, traditional and simplified Chinese characters. This function means the name you create will work just like any English-character name in that you can enter it into your browser and be taken to the corresponding website.

So, in a nut shell we talked about the advantages of registering a personal domain name and covered some limited information about the services domain registers offer. Most importantly, we addressed some unique features offered by the domain registrar I'm thrilled to be associated with and just had to share. You can find out more about my domain service that I'm excited about by visiting the link I placed in the resource box following this article. But in conclusion I'll say for the third time, read the fine print to ensure they offer you everything you need as well.

How to Make the Most Out of Your Domain

By Matthew Bredel

Whether you are trying to find a way to get started making money online or have domains sitting around not being utilized to make you money, domain parking may be the answer. This is actually one marketing tool that takes very little effort to incorporate and, although you won't likely become a millionaire with domain parking alone, it can provide you some extra income.

You probably come across these landing pages all of the time when you are conducting Internet research. You select a search result and find a page filled with ads and possibly related content for your search topic. Other times the pages you find contain under construction messages or are temporarily unavailable. The latter category of pages is kind of a waste of space as well as a big turn-off to visitors. Why have a page under construction when you can simply utilize domain parking and profit without a lot of extra work? Furthermore, it is never a good idea to turn-off site visitors and potential customers.

Instead of having a useless and income-less landing page, let's look at the two primary ways you can profit from domain parking:

--Make money from advertising on your site. The ad revenue is typically split with the domain host; they usually receive 10 to 40%.

--Increase your domain's ranking and value with the good content and ads and then sell the domain name.

Both of these options offer relatively simple, hassle-free ways to bring in some extra money. Whether you park your site and make money while you are creating the actual website, or start a business just purchasing and selling domain's, these can be practical ways for Internet business newbies to jump in the game and get their feet wet.

One key benefit to domain parking services is that they typically create relevant content for your site, which has the potential to boost your targeted traffic. This is especially helpful if you are working on a website that will eventually fill the domain; once you launch it you will have built-in traffic to build upon.

If you are interested in buying and selling domains for profit, the right domain parking service can make all the difference. With several different services to choose from, you can find a service that provides relevant content, optimization, templates, and domain brokering or just the right combination of features to fit your needs.

However, if your goal is to learn as much as you possibly can about making money from domain parking, Domain Profiteer may provide what you are seeking. It is basically an instruction manual guiding you through the process of making money with domains.

Setting up your domain with a parking service takes minutes and a good service will walk your through the process step by step. With the know-how and the right domain parking service, you can be on your way to a new income source that takes very little of your time and energy.

How to Pick a Killer Domain Name

By Mark C Archer

All you have to do is think about what people are searching for! So if your website is based on Quilting, and you offer some tips about quilting on your website, you could think about a domain name like *pro-quilting-tips.net* or something similar. By the way, I don't know if that domain even already exists ;)

That way, if people do a search for "quilting tips" in Google, your website is more likely to come up, because it almost exactly matches what the person is searching for! Of course, do not substitute this for good Search Engine Optimization.

Another spin on this (and if you have a small amount of money to spare), is to register a bunch of domains, using "long tail keywords". These are key phrases which people may rarely search for, but it almost guarantees that you'll get their click. Here's an example: *how-to-make-your-own-dog-food.com*

Also, when you're picking a domain name, it needs to be catchy, it needs to "roll off the tongue". And it also needs to be easy to spell! There's no use having a great website if some people can't spell the name!

Also, you should really try to steer away from .info domain names, if you want to look credible. These domains have been notorious for hackers who would like to place spyware on your pc, and if you choose one of these domains, you risk people being too scared to visit your website.

I hope this helps you pick the right domain!

Registering a Domain Name - 5 Tips

By Lit Smith

A picture is worth a thousand words, and a domain is worth ten thousand. When it comes to registering a domain, there are a few things that should be considered, this article will discuss some of these things.

Firstly, you will need to determine the top level domain name you will wish to use with your site, such as .com, .net and .org. It is important to pick a top level domain that goes hand in hand with your websites content. If your website offers purely information, you may opt for a .info name, or if it is purely commercial you may opt for a .com name.

Secondly, there is the price of the domain. Prices of domain names vary between registrars, and so a price comparison will be in order. The top level domain name chosen will also affect the price of the domain name, a .info domain name for example can be purchased for as little as $2 at some registrars.

Thirdly, and perhaps the most important part of registering a domain name is finding a good name that describes your site. Some tips when picking the second level domain names are:

- Choose a name that is brandable
- Choose a name that is easy to remember

Fourthly, if your product or service has been around for a while, and the general public has knowledge of it, then it would help to make your domain name relate to your service or product. By doing so you will gain better exposure in search engine results and better notability.

Finally, be sure to pick a reputable registrar to register your domain name with. Your domain name will be the gateway to your website, and you want to make sure that you will receive the support you require with it.

Get Paid to Park Your Domains

By Kristi Ambrose

There are two main ways you can make money with search engines. You can either join a PCC website and get a very small percentage of money per click or you can park your domains on a domain parking website. Both of these work about the same way. With a PCC site you will receive an affiliate search engine where you can send traffic, when people do searches on the site, or click keywords on the site you will receive a small amount of money per click. Once you reach a minimum amount of money you will get paid. Now this way is for the little guys. I wouldn't recommend this, if you're looking to actually make money to pay bills, or even eat!

So what is domain parking? Well, domain parking is pretty much the same idea as PPC except you receive a much larger percentage, and can actually make enough money to live on that money alone. Say you sign up with a domain site (I'll list a few in a second), you can then take your existing domain, and point it with DNS settings to the parking site.

Once you do this, you can start getting traffic to the domain name, and you can start making money every time someone either does a search, or clicks a keyword/result. The domain parking sites are pretty cool because they give you all sorts of options to work with such as categories for your domain, keywords, meta words, templates and more. This type of parking usually gets the feeds on the domains (the ads and such) from sites like Google, ask, or yahoo!

So when you send people to your search engine and they do searches, sites like Yahoo will pay the parking program, and you will receive a percentage as well. These percentages can be very low from 5% on up top 90% depending on what site you decide to go with. So, why doesn't everyone just pick the sites with a higher percentage?

Because there's a little thing we like to call CTR click through rate and CPM cost per thousand. These two attributes are what really decide on how much you make. The website can offer a 99% share, but the CTR and CPM could be really low which means you would make less money than you would, at a domain parking site with a medium share of 50% but a high CTR and a high CPM. It's all a science and there's no real way to figure out what site is the best, and how much money you can make.

The best thing you can do, it trial and error. See what site fits with you, which sites make you money, etc. If you have 10 domains, don't park them all at the same site. Pick 10 or so sites and see which ones do better at site a site b site c, etc.

So how do you find these "domain parking" programs. Easy! Simply look for Domain Parking Programs or Domain Parking Sites, or you could try these sites out. It used to be there were thousands of these sites but now only a few that are legit remain. I make no guarantee that you will make money at these sites, I'm simply here to tell you what domain parking is, tell you some of the stuff I know, and show you a few sites you can check out.

Sedo
Fabulous
RevenueDirect
Parked (the best site ever)
WhyPark
NameDrive (good for adult names)

Again, that's just a few sites you can check out. If you're looking for more, I suggest going to NamePros or DNForum and look through the different threads they have and see what different people say about different parking sites. Good luck in your search, I hope you find what you're looking for, and remember to always read and follow the TOS guidelines. They are there for a reason!

This author is a huge fan of Make Money Online

By Krista Garren

I have been asked many times by new clients how to select a business domain name. I've answered some commonly asked questions to assist you with one of the most important purchases you will make for your online business.

1. Should Your Business Name Be Your Domain Name?

99.9% of the time, the answer to this question is Yes. We are living in the Internet age, and consumers are becoming savvier at purchasing goods and services online. When people think of your product (or service) they'll connect it with your website, which makes repeated visits to your site easier for your customers.

What if the domain name is already taken? All is not lost. You have some options:

• Offer To Purchase - If you are connected with a brand name then you may want to pursue purchasing this name from its current owner. The domain contact information can be obtained in the form of a "Whois" lookup. Inquire as to whether they are open to selling the domain name, but be aware they'll likely charge a higher fee for it than you would normally pay.

• Back Order - This is becoming a very popular trend. Domains can now be "back ordered"; meaning simply that when the current owner's domain registration expires, should they not renew, the domain will become available for you to purchase. This may also carry a higher fee than a normal registration.

• Alternate Ideas - If your business is relatively new, it may be wise to consider alternative extensions. For example, mybusiness.com may not be available, but "mybusiness.net" or "mybussines.biz" might be. The Internet has exploded in the last year with alternate extensions and there are plenty to choose from.

2. Should My Domain Name Include Keywords?

This is an excellent idea! Consider for a moment that you are a candle maker whose business name is "Amy's Jar Candles". Your business name already uses "jar candles" as key product branding. Registering "amysjarcandles.com" is a terrific way to target your incoming audience which results in a better chance for sales. For example, chances are that anyone shopping for candles would have a general idea of what type of candle they need, such as a jar candle, or pillar candle. Buyers are far more likely to try out phrases like "jar candles" or "pillar candles" in the search engine rather than just "candles" because it will produce relevant results quicker. Having a domain name that matches your product or service branding is crucial because the easier it is to remember, the more likely it will be tried in a browser and/or search engines.

3. What Extension....com, .net, .org?

Domain names have been disappearing at a rapid rate and new extensions have been introduced to keep the pool of available names flowing. What if the ".com" extension for your domain name is not available? In this instance it's likely that you can register the ".net" or ".org" (or other) variation of your business name. Which do you choose? Should you select a ".net" or ".org" extension, or consider a country specific alternative such as ".ru" or ".co.uk"?

Does your business cater to the local community? If so, then it might be wise to consider searching for a country specific domain extension for your area first. For example, .com is universally regarded as a US or international extension, while .co.uk refers to the United Kingdom. Should a UK buyer be looking for car parts in his neighborhood "mikescarparts.co.uk" is more likely to be a local websites than "mikescarparts.com".

Businesses with an International audience can benefit from registering their name with the ".net" extension while ".org" can be useful for identifying a non-profit organization. Since the registration restrictions for ".org" have been removed however, this extension is open to anyone.

There are no rules on which extension to register, but should you decide to register a .com alternative, be very sure you market your company using the entire domain name. Most buyers assume a ".com" extension and without specific information may be unable to locate your site.

4. Long Domain Names...Good or Bad?

This is a topic on which you will find wide variation on opinions. Your domain name can be up to 67 characters in length, that's a lot of space!

The argument for a longer domain name is mainly that it's easier for the human mind to recall later. If your business name is "I Design and Host Websites" you probably wouldn't want to register "idahw.com" with the hope that someone would associate this with your company, product or service by remembering what that stands for.

For example, "gacwh.com" is a sequence of unrelated letters that could be difficult to type correctly; whereas if it that is registered as "getacheapwebhost.com" it is more likely to be remembered. Long domain names also have the added advantage of having room for your keywords. For example, if you have a site listed on Google with a domain name like "jansartsupplies" it may do better in a search for "art supplies" than a name such as "mikesartstuff.com."

The other side of this argument is that shorter names are easier to remember and type, and thus less prone to errors. For example, "websitedesign.com" is less susceptible to typos than "Icanbuildyourwebsiteaffordably.com"

The issue with shorter or more general names is that ones like "candles.com" and "tires.com" are generally not going to be available. If you Sdecide to register a short name, possibly your company's acronym, be sure it's a meaningful combination of characters that is easy to remember. I would recommend finding a domain name which represents your products in the shortest and most meaningful way possible. Businesses with long names may need to shorten their domain name down to assist users with remembering and typing long names; shorter names are also easier to fit in the title bar.

5. Should I use Plurals and Hyphenations?

Domain registration engines will usually suggest an alternative if the name you are searching for is taken. Sometimes this will include adding a hyphen or even "my" or "the" to the name.

If you wanted the term "design.com" and it was taken, you may find yourself staring at alternatives such as "mydesign.com", "thedesign.com" or even "designs.com". Which should you choose?

My rule of thumb for my clients is not to register "designs.com" if they cannot also register "design.com" The reason is that many times buyers may forget to type the "s" at the end of the name and your sale may go to someone else. There are those who will argue that this theory works in reverse, but why take chances? If you decide to register a name as "my..." or "the..." remember to market using your entire domain name.

Hyphens are another popular way to successfully register your name when the non-hyphenated version is no longer available. An advantage is being able to get the name that you want; however, it's my opinion that the disadvantages far outweigh this.

Hyphens are easy to forget. Users are comfortable with typing phrases like "jarcandles.com" but may have trouble remembering to include a hyphen if you registered "jar-candles.com". This may result in a sale for your competitor and translates to lost sales for you.

Hyphens are also an issue with verbal recommendations. Consider a verbal recommendation for a store named "anas-jar-candles.com." This may translate at some point to: "Wow, I visited Ana's Jar Candles dot com today and saw some really neat stuff." Later, you would probably type "anasjarcandles.com" into your browser hoping to visit. Ouch.

Prior to purchasing your domain name it's important to carefully consider your business community, target market, and keywords. Just ten minutes spent jotting down ideas can mean the world of difference when it comes to success with your online business.

Domain Appraisal Guide - 20 Factors That Decide the Selling Price

By Jim Trent

Domain appraisal route in the current diverse market situation is a big challenge. Sometimes it is hard or even impossible to leave out the subjective opinion and just stick to the facts and statistics.

However, it is dangerous to approach domain appraisal on "like it/don't like" basis. That's why an exact guide or checklist can provide a great help and make the appraisal process much easier.

Strictly speaking, there are 20 main factors in domain appraisal procedure. You will easily set the right value of your domain if you follow these steps.

1. Industry popularity. It is very important to answer a question "what is the market volume this domain applies to?" It may be a short and nice name but it will have less value if it cannot generate enough business.

2. Niche situation. It is sometimes a matter of fashion. Once you have applied the domain to a certain market, explore how wide or narrow is the niche it would fit in.

3. Keyword popularity. The best method of market prediction and one of the most accurate domain appraisal tools is the keyword popularity check. You have to find out the number of monthly searches for the keyword term your domain represents. Two of the all time favourites are Google Adwords Keyword tool and Yahoo's Overture. If a domain name doesn't contain any recognizable keyword, it should be brandable (see the point #10).

4. Substantiality. It is a domain appraisal criterion that evaluates if the domain name is serious enough to have business people showing any interest. Wacky names may be fun but they doesn't attract enough business.

5. Top level domain value. Yes, .COM maybe is king but how about other TLDs? Top tier extensions are .COM, .NET, .ORG, .CO.UK and .DE. They have a potential of going for over $100,000. Midfield consisting of .NL, .US, .FR, .RU, .IN and .CN hardly ever reaches $100,000 but can go beyond that for the right name.
Lower end of .INFO, .TV, .MOBI, .FM, .AM, .BE and .CC are sometimes seen selling in $XX,000 region whereas the struggle TLDs .BIZ, .WS, country TLDs and .NAME rarely make a thousand. Yet the domain appraisers have to keep in mind that a great .BIZ will definitely make more money than a shabby .COM.

6. Phone test can determine if there is some off-line value in the domain. If you can dictate the name over your phone without spelling it letter by letter, you may add more dollars to the price.

7. Memory test is another method of domain appraisal that determines if it has a business potential. Test your friends - tell them the name and see if they would be able to recall it after a day or two.

8. Length of the name. There is still a strong demand for three-letter and four-letter .COM domains. However, the majority of these aftermarket transactions take place amongst domain name "flippers" or re-sellers. It is not necessary for a name to be short in order to be good seller - a longer name that can still be easily memorized and that makes a perfect sense, will do as good.

9. Product recognition. From the business point of view, it is important that the visitor would be able to predict the content of the web-site once he sees the domain name.
A name containing "telephone", "mobile" or "games" and similar popular products would be likely to fetch more in the aftermarket. Whereas, a domain that resembles a popular branded product may prove a difficult thing to sell.

10. Brandability. In the situation when almost 100% of the English dictionary words are already registered as domain names or branded, if someone comes up with an interesting new word that can be turned into a trademark, domain appraisal has to consider and recognize that. It is essential to check both US and UK trademark registries before setting the sale price.

11. Exact keyword. It may be an advantage to have a single-keyword domain name, also two relevant keywords without a hyphen spells good selling price. However, when it comes to three or more keywords in a single domain especially when they are hyphenated, it will drastically reduce the aftermarket price.

12. Language. Top sellers are the domains in correct English language due to the worldwide audience and all the English-speaking countries. Also Spanish and German names sell quite well.

13. Clean grammar. Typos were popular some time ago. Now it is very important for business reputation to have a grammatically correct domain name.

14. Domain age. As the search engine algorithms deal with site ranking, domain age is quite important. Older domains tend to rank higher.

15. PageRank and domain appraisal. Initially PageRank was introduced by Google to rank web-pages by their importance. As webmasters still continue to fret about PageRank, it is still considered as a factor in domain appraisal.

16. Type-in traffic. If a domain name is short and obvious, it will attract traffic from direct browser type-ins. If you can prove a significant type-in traffic, you can set the selling price on a higher level.

17. Organic traffic. Again, it is necessary to provide a proof that the site receives free organic traffic from search engines and referrals. It is very difficult to build traffic and if the initial work is already done, you will expect the buyer to pay more.

18. Development value. Domain appraisal should also consider how the associated website is developed and optimized. On the other hand, an unprofessional site can harm the sales potential. There is nothing wrong with selling a domain with a web-site as a package deal, yet the quality of the site should be top-notch! The domain appraisal factors 14 to 18 are meant to deal with names that already have a web-site. If you are trying to appraise a blank domain name, you should not consider these points.

19. Total revenue generated from the site. A proof of regular revenue from different advertising and affiliate programs will drive the sale price up, yet a good site content alone will doubtfully make a good sale if the domain doesn't meet at least some of the aforementioned criteria from 1 to 13.

20. Comparison. Before concluding a domain appraisal, you will want to compare the domain with previous similar sales from the aftermarket. Although it is true that each name is unique, there is fashion and there are trends. That's why it may be useful to visit Sedo, Tdnam or any other aftermarket to see what domains attract more bids, explore the internet for previous sales. A good idea is to sign up for several web-master forums in order to explore the domain appraisal requests posted by members. You will be able to post a domain appraisal request yourself and compare your verdict with judgment of fellow webmasters.

This guide contained the 20 primary criteria of domain appraisal. Use them to determine the value of names you buy and sell. If you keep this guide as your checklist, you will probably find that domaining is an interesting and rewarding industry.

Want to Register a Domain Name For Your Online Business?

By Fabian Tan

A domain name gives you a business identity and it as be used as a chief marketing tool. Also find out which registration will apply to you the best. It is highly recommended that one registers a domain name that consists of major keywords in place of a company name. This is because surfers normally search for subjects rather than a proper name.

So if you wish to receive traffic use domain name which includes important keywords. If you customers are local and want to expand the brand name just in specific areas, it will be sensible to get the company registered locally instead of capitalizing it under the presence of search engines.

Avoid registering long domain names with many syllables. This way your name will be

Remembered easily and bookmarked. Hyphens must be used if the name has more than three words in it. Protect the name by making multiple extension registrations like .org and .net. The will act as a precaution against getting copied.

To reserve domain name is easy and cost free. Choose a company that will be provide the same services as a big branded company but will charge less. Since every registrar offers similar series it does not matter where your domain is registered.

Always guard you privacy. A privately owned domain registration will always keep your personal information out of the database and thus prevent spasm from entering your inbox.

Remember a domain name does not make your site popular; it is the content available on the site that makes it popular.

How to Buy a Domain Name For Your Internet Business

By Fabian Tan

Good domain names give the public a fair idea about the content in the site. There is a misconception among many of us about domain name being purchased through content provider. The services provided by such companies of course make it easier for companies and individuals for purchasing domains. However this could be done on our own too.

First you need to check for availability of domain. If available, move a step further i.e. filling information about yourself. Then copy pastes the DNS servers that will be used for domain purpose. Once the form is filled and submitted Inter NIC emails the form to you and you have to only respond to the mail. This is done to prevent people from creating registered domains in the name of other people without their knowledge.

The fee charged to register a domain is anywhere around $70. This includes 2 years maintenance and registration process. After 2 years you will have to cough up$ 35 as fees. However as of now no rule mentions that the registrant must be located physically in the represented city which the domain has requested. Most of the companies will be glad to clear you from the trouble of setting it all by yourself by charging you a fee for their services.

If you are keen on a domain that is already taken, you can't do much about it. You either purchase it from the owner or you could wait patiently wait. If the domain owner has not paid the late fees it will come back to the market and will be available for purchase for a fee of $70. But this cannot be guaranteed.

What's in a Domain Name? Your Business Success

By Erik Gifford

A good domain name is imperative to creating a successful network marketing website. Your domain name serves a variety of purposes and gives visitors an indication of your website's theme. A good domain name will make your website grow by drawing in interest from the web.

There are several methods of choosing the right domain name for your business website. What sounds good to you? What is the most appropriate name for your business based upon personal preferences? Make note of these names and save them for reference, but don't purchase a domain yet.

The next step is to ascertain how the domain name will reflect on your network marketing business. There are many services online that research keywords for you. They can show you the most relevant keywords for your network marketing business. These keyword services can help you decide on the appropriate content, what words to use and possibly even a domain name.

Purchasing a domain is an easy process. The best way is to evaluate a number of domain name registration companies. These online entities are known as "registrars." You can begin narrowing your selection once you locate a number of suitable registrar companies.

Does the registrar accept a variety of payment methods? This is very important, as your registrar should be eager to work with you. They should be focused on catering to the needs of the customer. If you find a registrar that is a "credit card only" company, then avoid them. These companies are notorious for being somewhat lazy and providing poor customer service. If they aren't willing to work with you when you are giving them money, then you can imagine what it will be like should you need technical support.

You also should do general research on each company to ensure there aren't any complaints against them. Has anyone reported an experience with them? Were their reports positive? Is there any indication that the company does not provide adequate service? You also can check with the Better Business Bureau, but keep in mind that companies aren't required to list themselves with the BBB. An absence of a listing doesn't mean they are not legitimate. It simply means they aren't listed.

You will purchase a domain name for your network marketing business in the same way you would any other product. Your purchase will be good for one year; you will be able to repurchase your domain annually. The domain price should never be more than $15. You should remember that you get what you pay for and a very low price may indicate a very small registrar. Your ideal price range should be between $10 and $15.

Domain redirection is a simple process that can have great results. This is the act of purchasing extra domains and having all traffic going to those redirected to your primary home page. There are many methods for redirecting traffic from a domain to your website. DNS redirection employs the use of IP addresses and independent servers. If your domain names have a unique server, DNS redirection should be adequate and simple. This method of redirection is usually free.

Inline redirection involves linking a URL address with a file in a different server. This may involve a small annual fee. This provides a link on the spare domain's landing page that visitors can click to continue on to your main website.

Domain forwarding is most often offered at no cost to domain owners. This is an automated process where all traffic to the spare domain is automatically forwarded to your primary domain.

Finding the right domain name is easy with all the options available to webmasters today. Keyword research and free advice is available across the Internet to accommodate your needs. You can have a domain name that helps build a successful network marketing business with a few clicks of the mouse and a few hours of research.

Which One's Better For Your Website - Dedicated IP Address Or a Shared IP Address?

By Alka Shakya

There has been an age old debate over which one's better, a dedicated IP address of a shared one. A dedicated or a static IP address is a unique IP address that represents your website. Whether you type in your IP address or your webpage name it'll open the same page. A shared IP address on the other hand is the one where you website will reside on a shared server and share the same IP as the ones on the server. On the shared IP you have to type in your web page name. Relying on the definition alone having something personalized is always luxurious than having to share it. With this luxury comes the price. Dedicated IP is more expensive (few bucks extra) than the shared one. But the debate over which ones better is not only about the price but from the SEO point of view as well.

In general, having a shared IP address does not harm your site rank at all. However, SEO experts usually suggest a dedicated server. According to them, search engines give more preference to a static IP. After a bit of research this is what I found out about how search engine spiders like Google bots differentiate between the IP addresses. When these spiders come across your site they divide it with basic html 1.0. With a dedicated IP address the spiders are able to do so with html 1.0 alone and they get indexed as soon as it is parsed. On the other hand with a shared IP these spiders may have to use html 2,3 and so on until they are able to find the address for your site taking as long as 3 months or even more. During this phase the spiders will use the IP of the main site on the server, usually the host's site. They keep crawling back until they find your site. The links build by you for your site during this phase is accredited on the main site rather than yours. You will get these links back after that phase is through. So the bad thing here is some other site gets all the credit for your hard work, which could be frustrating.

The other advantages of having a dedicated IP are as follows:

  1. Less Downtime: Even though it's for a short period of time, every time your IP refreshes your site might experience a downtime. There are chances of losing potential clients if they happen to visit your site at the very moment. With a dedicated address this risk can be eliminated.
  2. Anonymous FTP: A static IP is usually preferred by those who need to let Anonymous FTP function work properly. With this they can access the files in a special directory. The username used to access these files is anonymous hence it gets the name Anonymous FTP.
  3. Private SSL Certificate: You can own your private SSL certificate which are used by secure ecommerce websites for online monetary transactions especially through credit cards.
  4. Remote Access: Another advantage of dedicated IP is the ability access to your PC from anywhere in the world. You can use various programs for example Remote Administrator. For this you need a fixed address to maintain it to let the program find your pc.

Hosting your site on a shared server might not be that bad but there are occasions when a shared IP might hurt your website when one of the websites on the shared server gets flagged for spamming or faces other penalty. When this happens other websites on that server might have to suffer as well.

If your website is doing really well on the World Wide Web, as others I would suggest you to host your website on a dedicated server. With the advantages it has to offer and the unlimited opportunities it holds it'll be clever to book your place now.

Domain Registrar Reviews - Choosing the Right Domain Registrar

By Alex Johnson

There are many popular domain registrars out there, many offering different kinds of services and features. Choosing the right registrar depends on your website's requirements and budget. Although price is not that much different for single purchases, it does become a factor when you need to buy a number of domain names.

If you require a domain name for your small business, then going for the leading domain name providers such as Yahoo or GoDaddy would be advisable. You may want to consider other options if you need more than one domain name, or a premium domain name (a high value name being offered for resale by the owner) for your website.

You can easily find domain registrar reviews that compare domain names and different providers in terms of features, popularity, and price. These reviews are very helpful in making a decision about your future domains.

Who you choose as your domain registrar really depends on your requirements. But you must always consider the reputation and trustworthiness of a particular registrar before purchasing their service. Domain name registration starts as low as $1.99, and can be up to $14.99 per year, depending on the choice of registrar.

Some of the established names in domain registration, which you can use a basis of comparison, are Yahoo Domains, iPower, and Register.com. Some of these companies also provide hosting along with domain registration, allowing you combine services and save cash. A few of these providers, like Yahoo Domains, will waive the domain registration fee if you purchase one of their hosting packages.

Advantages of Yahoo Domain Registration

By Alex Johnson

When it comes to domain name registration, you'll never run short on choices. Domain registrars all differ in many respects, including their cost, features, customer service, and other factors. Yahoo Domains is one of the most popular registrars in the world because it offers many advantages and unique features.

Using Yahoo Domains, you can register as many names as you like. When it's time to add content, they will help you set up your site from scratch in simple and easy steps. There are site builders and tutorials available to walk you through the whole process of setting up a site, regardless of your previous knowledge of web design.

Not all registrars offer all domain extensions, such as .info., tv., .name, .fm, and others. Yahoo Domains offers all currently available domain extensions. While currently unregistered domain names can be registered for $9.95 annually, you can also register premium domain names at varying costs. Premium domains include domain names that are high value, and owned by a reseller who makes them available through brokers such as Yahoo.

Since Yahoo is one of the most established names on the Internet, and provides a number of unique and robust technologies to users, you can be confident that they can be a comprehensive, full service solution for your business needs - from domain registration to search engine marketing ad campaigns.

If you are looking for a reliable domain name registration service equipped with important, valuable features, and trusted customer service, Yahoo Domains is a perfect choice.

Domain Parking is Dead

By David G. Holland

But why? Let's analyze the situation as a whole. Big and small domainers search on a daily basis for good domains, as well buy and sell great ones. Unfortunately, by the day's end, both big and small domainers are still parking their domains and waiting for a good deal on them. Some people don't realize how bad it is to have those terrible pages full of links.

And some, think it's good to have something on the domain until they don't sell it. Well, you're doing nothing. You're just losing the chance to earn lots of money with your domain name and raise it's rank, so you have a successful sale. Yes you can make money parking domains. But unless you have a great generic name and preferably a .com don't count on huge paychecks. You can own 1,000 not-so-good names and park them anywhere and never earn your money back. By parking your domains, you are:
  • Earning not even 10% of what you could earn with your domain
  • Paying high taxes to companies that help you do nothing with your domain
  • Scaring users away from your domain. C'mon, who will visit a page with lot's of uninteresting links and non-related content? Who will click on one of those links?

I made a little example list that shows what's wrong with parked domains. This way you can understand why parking is bad idea.

SnowmobileRentals.com

I think the most reasonable thought about this was having a website about, erm... Snowmobiles? Well. I'm seeing a terrible website with no design whatsoever and lot's of links. Why someone would come back to this website after all? And why would someone click one of those absolutely non-interesting promotional links?

TheNutcracker.com

Again. What would be good here? Christmas, of course. Again, we have a big turn-off. A plain white and blue page with lot's of links.

BassMagazine.com

This domain has everything to be very successful. I think he's crying to be developed. Some news, pictures, videos and more interesting content would be the perfect match for this domain. But no! Let's park and create huge turn-off landing pages.

Domain parking is completely obsolete. Today everyone is talking about Web 2.0 and interactivity. Parking simply doesn't fit in the new era of internet and websites. Why would someone visit your "website" if the only thing he will find are links? That's why Domain Parking is dead. It's the complete opposite to user-friendly websites. Parking makes your domain trash, literally.

But... what can I do?

The solution, my friend, is simple: Develop it. Developing your domain consists in turning your website into a real website about the subject your domain is related. But developing websites isn't a walk in the park. Takes time and many efforts, and some people don't even know how to start. You need to gather good content for your website. However, this is where software like SteadyNiche saves you from spending lots of money with freelancers and days of work.

SteadyNiche allows you to develop your domains easily. You don't need to manage or gather content, neither you need to learn programming languages and difficult stuff like that. The software generates and filters content based on a keyword chosen by you. For example, "baseball" would output news, videos, pictures and more content related to baseball. Pretty much does everything for you. You just need a hosting account with some hosting company. I would suggest PolurNet, HostGator, HostPapa, Dreamhost... there are many good ones.

Yes, you can always develop your own websites using tools like Microsoft Frontpage or Adobe Dreamweaver. I also would like to mention XSite Pro, which is way better than Frontpage, but SteadyNiche makes your life very easy. I'm a happy customer and i'm not afraid to share my secret. This is the web future, embrace it.

Domain Names - Home Based-Business Or Affiliate Program?

By Terri Stallcop

Let's talk about affiliate programs and ways to monetize your business prospects. Or, an even more FUN topic would be How To Make More Money. A little while back I had no idea that I could make money online. I didn't know what an affiliate program was and I certainly didn't know how to market one.

Now I know how much FUN the new Fun-damentals of network marketing can be!

My FUN-damentals of success have changed! Now that I know a tiny bit more about marketing and a lot more about how to build a network, let me briefly explain.

As you might know, affiliates programs do the marketing. All you have to do to make more money is share a website with people, either online or off. Who knew! Where have affiliate programs been all my life :) For example, this is my favorite affiliate because it's so easy. It's called Global Domains International (GDI)

GDI provides web services and an affiliate program that can make extra income for you. Since you don't even have to know anything about marketing, it's the perfect extra income source online. But if you decide to go ahead and do affiliate marketing with GDI, you can create more than extra cash."Income For Life" is GDI's slogan.

For some, GDI is more than an affilliate program. It is an extremely successful home-based business. It costs $10/month. A lot of people really enjoy the fact that there isn't any product inventory and there isn't a lot of arm twisting strategies in the GDI training. In fact, the GDI system doesn't include any sales tactics of any kind.

But let's say all you want is a little extra income. You don't care about a home-based business. You just want a $500/month raise. Here's what you buy with your first $10 - a 10 page website with GDI hosting and one domain name. Now, don't worry about having to build a 10 page website. It's available but you certainly do not have to use it. Plus, it isn't necessary to have more than one GDI domain name but I do recommend at least one.

Only one of my domain names right now is from GDI, the one that goes with my website. You see, it's not the domain name or the website services that is worth $10/month. Afterall, at GoDaddy domain names are only $10/year!

What is waaayyy more valuable that $10/month buys you is the affiliate program. And you don't even have to study how that works. GDI is the best I've seen in fast start training. Like I said, you don't have to market GDI. All you need to do is share the movie, get 5 people to join within one week, and you receive your first bonus which is a $100 bonus. You've just recouped your $10/month for almost the whole year.

That's why getting 5 other people to do the same is so easy because every time anyone recruits 5 people inside a week, another $100. There's no limit to how often you get that bonus.

Now here's the unbelievable part. This will sound like hype, but stay with me... if you and your 5 do that kind of recruiting, that is a big dollar figure. Not hype, you actually make $3905 that month.

But don't take my word for it. Do this...

  • Click on one of my domain names <<<======= click
  • Then click on the banner
  • Then opt-in to my Ferrari :) capture page
  • Then do the 7 day trial for free
  • Sign up your first 5 during that trial week for the $100 bonus
  • Make sure your 5 do the same
  • Cash your $3905 check

See what I mean. It's not really about domain names. It's about making more money and helping others do the same.

Simple Ways To Buy And Sell Domain Names

By Oseremen Aigbokhae

To buy and sell domain names online is the best business you can find on the internet. It is almost risk free and involves small capital investment as low as $10. You can register a quality domain name for $9.25 only and sell as much as $5,000 within 30 days or less.

Here are my guaranteed simple ways to thrive in this lucrative business.

1. Research before Registering Domains

In this business, junk domains have no place of recognition. If you register a poor name, the truth is that you may not be able to sell it even for the cost of registration.

So research domain names that are:

- niche market specific (marketability)
- easy to remember (memorable)
- generic (everyday English words that are popular)
- free from infringement (no trademark violations)
- short words (the shorter the better)
- keyword or keyword phrase rich (for search engine positioning)
- dot com extension preferred (.com, .net, .org etc in that order)

2. Market Your Registered Domains

Thousands, if not millions of names are being registered daily. This means that the market is more than saturated competitively for your names to stand out. Therefore, the simplest way to sell is to aggressively market your product in prime websites with prime, auction or featured listing. Create awareness and buying desire in the minds of your prospects.

3. Sell after Domain Name Appraisal

In order not to short change or price yourself out of the market, you need to compare the price you expect from your domain names with similar ones already sold. Or, in the alternative, you can invest between $15 and $50 in appraisal if you can afford it. The advantage of appraisal is that it gives you a realistic idea of how much to expect from a sale or to know what to do with the domain name before selling.

Personally, for instance, an appraised name with $150 or less value simply prompt me to develop it over time before selling rather than outright sale after registration.

As I continue to earn money from it through affiliate products sales, contextual advertising (e.g. Google AdSense, bidvertiser, etc) and selling my own products I am invariably increasing its value by how much I currently earn from it for eventual sale.

Make Money With Domain Real Estate Online

By Kristi Ambrose

What is domain real estate and how can you make money with it? Well as the title says, its real estate for your domains. You can buy and or sell domains that you own. The best thing you can do is to NOT just go out and register a domain name and expect it to sell for thousands of dollars.

If you expect to be able to buy a domain name that you just registered and sell it, your crazy! In order to sell a domain, and have it be worth anything it either has to be brand-able (hotels.com, cars.com photography.com), or it has to be worth something to begin with. A domain is worth something, usually when its already developed into an existing website.

This isn't always the case, but more often than not it is. Example, I bought a domain at the beginning of 08 for $9.99 on NameCheap, just because I was curious about this domain real estate thing. On sites like estibot it was worth zero, it had no back links, no rank, brand new. So I decided to get it developed, which is one of the most important things for any domain name.

With in 7 months it went from being worth zero to being worth over $1500. Again not that much money. But by having it developed and getting back links to it, it was raised from PR0 to PR3 in just a month, and every single week the price goes up $10-$20. This website isn't anything spectacular. Its just a one page, developed joke site. So imagine how much a domain could be worth if you really got involved in developing it!

Once you get it developed, and its actually worth something to someone (an individual or a company) you can sell this domain for money. Domain real estate follows the buy low sell high rule. You could easily buy a domain for $5000 and sell it in a few months or a year for triple that amount, if you work at it. Or in some instances like mine you can register a domain name, develop it, market it, get traffic to it, and sell it in a year for a few grand.

And yes, people do this for a living and actually make really great money at it. The real point is having "an eye" for a good domain name. The rules have sort of changed over the years, but it used to be that the domain was considered worthy if it was brand-able, one worded (cat, dog, art, photography, truck, car, fabulous etc), and if it was a .com extension. Now this still does come in hand when doing domain real estate, but there's also a new rule. A domain name may not always be worth very much to an individual, but it might be worth a lot to the end user. An end user, is someone that is actually going to use the domain and not resell it like you may have.

So StumpSomeone may not be worth anything to you or me, but to someone interested in having a joke website, they might be willing to pay a pretty penny for it, sometimes its good to sit on a domain for awhile rather than just sell it right away. Find the right buyer. But don't ask for a price that no one is willing to pay because then you will never sell the domain and that's NOT what you want. There are tons of sites you can find more info on about domain real estate. Here are a few really good reference and resource sites you can take a look at; NamePros, Sedo, Moniker etc.

How to Apply Domain Name Marketing

By Tracy Hamilton

A domain name is your style of being known on the internet. The name that you select will influence how many prospective clients or customers you will have.

You need to be really mindful what name you select as it will be used to describe your business. Don't use a name that does not reflect on the products you offer or the service that you provide.

Choosing a domain name is critical to any business that is online. When you use email marketing to attract your potential customers your domain name will be the name that the recipient will see.

When you use domain name marketing to increase your business income you will need to spend a little extra time ascertaining what group of people you will want to reach the most.

If you have a product for teens you don't necessarily need to sell to adults. You need to recognize how to grab their attention. Your domain name will speak for your business and supply the email recipient with the information they need to determine if they will delete your email or open it.

These agencies can be obtained online and can help you decide what domain name would be right for you based on the information you provide to them regarding your product descriptions and what your goal is. Have You Registered Today?

By Sheldon C. A. Smith

What are you waiting for? Why haven't you registered already? Don't you know that the internet is growing at a staggering rate every single day? With all of that growth there are unlimited opportunities in which to tap into to make a living online. Whether it is a service or product that you plan to sell online, the most important way for people to identify with your company is through your online business name, also referred to as your domain name.

Your domain name is the first thing that people identify you or your company by. It is your personal piece of real estate on the information highway. Nobody else can register your exact name; only a variation of it. For example, if you register acmewidgets.com, someone else would still be able to register acmewidgets.net or acmewidgets.org. When you register your domain name, it is recommended that you register the other top level domains and have them pointed or forwarded to the main site. This prevents confusion for your potential customers.

Another point to remember when you are creating your online identity is to try and register a domain name with a keyword that describes your business. Let's say you plan to sell Self Help books on home renovations. For starters, the word 'renovation' could be included in your name which would also count as a keyword for search purposes. You can try something like howtorenovate.com, homereno.com and so forth. The point is to let your domain name tell your potential customers what line of business you are in while buttering up the search engines to have your site ranked higher.

Now there are many companies that offer domain registration services and many of them are very reputable. When searching for a domain registrant, check to see that you have full control over your DNS settings. You also want to find out about transfer fees if applicable. Do they offer you free or cheap web space to get you started? And lastly, make sure that you shop around before you decide and compare. Just remember, the cheapest price isn't always the best to go with.

Good luck with your new venture and be sure to get a hold of your deed to your piece of the internet highway - register today!

Get started today by registering your domain name. Visit http://www.laddienetworks.com and search for your domain name today. Pricing is very reasonable and you receive $100 worth of freebies.
