Domain Names - How to Register & Secure Cheap Domain Names

By Mark Bellinger

Securing Cheap Domains Doesn't Mean Cheap & Nasty

A "Cheap Domain" does not necessarily mean a bad domain or something to be avoided.

Therefore you do not necessarily have to pay more to have a good domain name - so it therefore follows that it would be wise to spend as little as possible on your domain names, right?

That's right but the one big thing to consider when buying "cheap" domains is the domain name registrar. This is where it can get ugly because if you buy from a cheap and nasty registrar your domains may not be transferable or easy to manage.

Registrars are authorized by the internet governing body so you need to make sure that the company you are registering a domain name with meets this qualification.

Choosing an Appropriate Name

You can bet that the best name for your business has probably been taken. Well don't despair as it is still possible to register domain names that are both memorable and appropriate as there are still many domain name options and combinations available with various extensions which provides you more flexibility when it comes to choosing your domain name.

It is therefore important to consider the following when choosing your domain name...

Your Domain Name is an Investment

Domain names, like real estate, appreciate in value with time and as a domain name ages not only does it become more valuable, it also gains more credibility & integrity with the search engines which is a very important part of the domain's value. Considering the above it is therefore important to secure as many appropriate domains as possible as without delay - time adds value don't forget.

So what if your preferred name has already been snapped up?

So getting back to the likely prospect that your chosen domain name has been taken.

Well you might not have to settle for second best...

The most popular top level domain (TLD) is the dotcom extension for businesses, but there are some good alternatives such as .net .org .biz which are good choices for the appropriate type of business, eg. an IT company should have a .net extension & a non-profit ro government organization should have a .org extension.

Also a country specific domain name (like .de, .nu, .sg, .uk, etc.) might be even more appropriate for your business than a dot com name - so do not neglect this option as you are more likely to be able to secure the name that you really want. However, if you're stuck on the dot com TLD you can always consider adding a search engine friendly term to the name to secure your preferred name.

For instance if your preferred name is hosting you could choose hosting-tips or hosting-usa or hosting123 etc..

Once Your Domain is Registered?

Once your domain is registered ensure that your domain record remains locked which protects your domain in terms of its security and prevents it from being able to be transferred to some unscrupulous webmaster.

Finally remember domains are not only cheap but an investment in the future - so grab as many as you can.
